POLICE chiefs have revealed a motorcyclist involved in a serious accident on the A38 is in a 'critical condition'.

Staffordshire Police and West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) were called to the A38 southbound between Burton and Fradley at 2pm yesterday.

All four lanes of the A38 between Barton under Needwood and Alrewas were closed due to the 'major' incident for more than four hours.

A spokesman for the force said: "We are appealing for witnesses following yesterday's serious road traffic collision on the A38 near Burton at around 2pm.

"Officers attended along with colleagues from West Midlands Ambulance Service and found a blue Suzuki motorcycle on the southbound carriageway near the Barton under Needwood junction.

"The rider, a 52-year-old man from the Black Country area of the West Midlands, was airlifted to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire after being treated at the scene. He remains in hospital in a critical condition.

"The man’s family have been informed and are being supported at this difficult time.

"The road was closed for approximately four hours while specialist collision investigators carried out a detailed examination of the scene. We would like to thank the public for their patience and understanding whilst the road was closed.

"An investigation into the collision is now under way and witnesses are asked to contact us on 101, quoting incident number 402 of 20 July."

A spokesman  for WMAS said: “The motorcyclist, a man in his forties, had come off his bike. He had numerous serious injuries. They include injuries to his chest and abdomen. He had fractured ribs and a fractured leg.

“His limbs were splinted and he was immobilised on a scoop stretcher. The doctor on board the Midlands Air Ambulance anaesthetised him at the scene and maintained his airway. He was flown under alert to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire.”

Both carriageways were reopened late last night.
