A COUPLE who turned around the ailing fortunes of an East Staffordshire pub have been nominated for a top award.
Landlords Stuart and Jane Scrimshaw are in line to receive Marstons’ ‘Best Newcomer’ award for their work as landlords of The Crown, in Yoxall, since they took over at the start of 2013.
The couple are due to attend a ceremony at Wolverhampton Racecourse on March 20.
Mr Scrimshaw, 42, told the Mail the nomination was recognition for his and his wife’s hard work.
He said: “We were buzzing when we received the letter because it recognises the hard work we have done.
“It was quite good to be put forward because it was completely out of the blue.
“When we started it was definitely quiet, during the week we would hardly have anyone in.
“But now we have built the trade up and there always seems to be people in here.”
In what are recognised as tough times for publicans across the country, Mr Scrimshaw said it is vital communities back landlords if they are to be a success.
He said: “You need to have the community behind you. We had the passing trade but you also need a core of local people who are interested in what you are doing.
“We also buy our products from local suppliers, so our meat comes from the local butcher and our vegetables are all sources locally so everything we get it from people in this area.
“People are aware of that and they quite like it.”
Mr Scrimshaw added that The Crown offers far more than just a wide selection of beer and good food.
He said: “We have live music nights, themed nights and we have raised more than £3,000 for charity since we have taken over.
“We always do a lot of things to try and get the community involved.”
