A CHARITY which supports thousands of serving and retired firefighters and their families has been given a £4,000 boost.

Crews from Swadlincote Fire Station have presented a cheque for £4,019 to Dr Jill Tolfrey, chief officer of The Firefighters' Charity which helps fire service personnel and their families in times of need. The money has come from the proceeds of the annual plant sale at the fire station, in Civic Way, which raised a total of £7,881.42. Members of the fire service pay for the plants themselves, with profits donated to The Firefighters' Charity.

A spokesman for Swadlincote Fire Station said: "Thank you very much for those who came to our annual fire station bedding plant sale.

"It was a great success with every plant being sold. Thanks to all those who helped out throughout the week."
