POLICE investigating a suspected stabbing in Burton have arrested a man.
The 36-year-old Burton man was arrested at 12pm today on suspicion of assault.
The arrest comes after a 30-year-old man from Burton was assaulted in Waterloo Street at the junction with Albert Street at around 12.25pm yesterday. He suffered knife wounds to his stomach and arm and remains in hospital in a stable condition.
Chief Inspector Steve Maskrey said: “I would like to thank the public for their patience and cooperation while we dealt with this serious incident yesterday.
“We can reassure you that we do not believe this incident is linked to previous community tensions in the area and at this stage we are working to understand the circumstances of the assault.
“I can understand residents concerns and I’d encourage them to speak to local officers who are in the area today carrying out inquiries and reassurance patrols.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Staffordshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 234 of February 18, or independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
The man remains in custody for questioning.
