A BRASS band in South Derbyshire is aiming to bring to life a fund-raiser with a difference, when they host a karaoke night with a difference.

Newhall Brass Band is hoping to boost funds for its trip to a national competition through a ‘brassaoke’ night next month

The group, which is based at the Labour Club in Newhall, is looking to raise around £2,600 through this and other events, to cover the transport and accommodation of players when they head to the section finals of the National Brass Band Championships in Cheltenham, in September.

Band spokesman Peter Woodings told the Mail: “This is the most important contest that a band can be involved in. It’s very prestigious to be in the final, and it’s not something you do all that often as a band.”

It is the second time the 28-strong group has made it to the finals, after a run of success in other competitions. They beat bands both locally and regionally to get to this stage.

The Brassaoke night, on July 19, is one of several events the band members are taking part in to boost their coffers for the event.

It will be held at de Ferrers Academy and proceeds from the evening will be split between the school’s parent, staff and friend association (PSFA) and the band.

Glyn Burroughs, who has organised the night with the PFSA, said there was a link between the two causes.

“The school has an extremely strong history of music, and brass used to be massive in that area. It isn’t anymore, but there are a lot of people who are still interested, and this will give them a chance to enjoy it.”

Several of the players became interested in brass as students at de Ferrers, and rekindled their love of the style at Newhall.

On the night itself, there will be a catalogue of songs provided, and people have the chance to bid for the song they want to head played in brass. There will be a mix of traditional and modern songs available.

Tickets cost £5 for adults and £3.50 for concessions. Tickets are available from the Trent campus at de Ferrers, by calling 01283 239936 or at www.newhallband.co.uk
