PEOPLE in South Derbyshire who want to turn over a new leaf for the New Year are invited to a healthy lifestyle event being held in the district.

Healthier South Derbyshire, which attracted around 700 people last year, returns to Green Bank Leisure Centre, in Civic Way, Swadlincote, on Saturday from 10am to 2pm

The event will be attended by around 45 different groups dealing with health and wellbeing, while visitors can also try their hand at a new sport or fitness activity.

Vicky Smyth, health partnerships manager for South Derbyshire District Council, said: “This is something we do every year which fits in really well with people’s New Year’s resolutions.

“This is the time of year when people start to think about their health again after the excesses of Christmas and look towards getting themselves a bit healthier for the summer.

“It’s something which is educational but also fun, and people can come and have a go at something they might not have tried before and learn where they can do it on a regular basis.

“People can come for the whole event or just drop in for a while, and we encourage the whole family to come along as there’s something for everyone.”

Activities on offer include Plates session at 11am, Zumba classes at noon, ‘Boogie’ Bounce mini trampoline aerobics at 12.30pm and chair aerobics at 1pm.

Meanwhile, free swimming will be on offer from 1.30pm to 5pm, while Burton Canoe Club will offer canoeing taster sessions in the pool from 2pm to 3pm.

The club will also be offering people the chance to try out canoeing on dry land using a specially-designed machine.

Other activities will include a health and fitness challenge, body MOTs, giant games, food tasting, table tennis, boccia, free treatments from therapists and free gym tours.

Agencies which will have a presence on the day include the Derbyshire Stop Smoking Service, Age UK, running group organiser Jog Derbyshire and eating disorders charity First Steps.

Also attending will be sexual health agencies, community sports group Village Games Derbyshire, Derbyshire Police and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service.

More information is available online at www.southerderbyshire.org which is a ‘one stop shop’ for health and wellbeing in the district.
