A BARMAN fought off a knife-wielding robber by throwing pint glasses at him.

The have-a-go hero successfully saw off the knifeman, who had walked into The Gardens pub in Ferry Street, Stapenhill, and posed as a customer before demanding money.

The crook, described as a 40-year-old man in dirty jeans, fled empty handed and in fear after the glasses came hurtling towards him.

A manhunt has now been launched by police who fear the still-at-large offender could strike again.

Inspector Tyrone Kerr, of Burton Police Station, said the knife ordeal began at 2.45pm when the thug, wearing a grey coat, walked into the pub.

He began talking to the barman as though he was a genuine customer before producing a flick-knife and threatening to stab the worker unless he was given cash from the till.

"The bartender responded by throwing glasses towards the offender," Insp Kerr said.

"Because of this, the offender made good his escape and no money was taken."

The crook is described as white, around 5ft 6ins tall with stubble on his face.

Anyone who has seen him is urged to call police immediately.

Insp Kerr said: "This is obviously a potentially dangerous man and we are very keen to trace him and question him.

"If you are threatened with a knife, the general advice would always be to comply with the demands and try to remember as many details as possible so we can put together a description of the offender.

"Trying to fight the offender worked on this occasion, but who knows what could have happened in different circumstances? Victims aren't always so lucky."

Anyone who saw the knifeman fleeing the pub after the attack on January 4 or who knows his identity is urged to call Staffordshire Police by dialling 101, quoting incident number 360 of that date, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

There was no response when the Mail attempted to contact the pub for a comment yesterday afternoon.
