A SECOND half strike from Northampton Saints dnied 10-man Barton Ladies a share of the spoils.
Injury and unavailability forced Barton to travel away with only 10 players.
Despite the player deficit Barton maintained an attacking formation with Amanda Kirkland the lone central defender. Barton controlled possession with Justine Woodcock and Becky Hickman bossing midfield.
Industrious running from Hannah Smith worked the Northampton defenders and she penetrated the D on numerous occasions. However, Barton failed to capitalise on their domination and chances went begging.
Solid defending by Kirkland and Carol Watson limited Northampton to only a handful of chances which were easily dealt with by captain Connie Wain. The half came to a close with a contentious decision when a short corner strike from Kirkland was ruled out by the home umpire.
Strong midfield pressure from Julie Manning and Grace Winfieldale thwarted Northampton at the start of the second half.
Barton regained the lion’s share of possession only to concede the only goal of the game to a counter-attack midway through the half.
Barton pushed for an equaliser and Steph Welch came close on a number of occasions.
However, a combination of last ditch tackles and wayward shooting meant Northampton to hang on for the win.
Barton look to put their survival fight back on track this Saturday with a home time against bottom of the league Kettering.
Meanwhile, Charlotte Moore inspired the seconds to a 5-1 win over Stafford.
