PEOPLE are being urged to 'help save lives' by applying to become a retained firefighter.
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service has launched a recruitment drive to boost the number of retained firefighters in Barton under Needwood.
The retained firefighters would help provide vital emergency response cover from either their home or work base, which must be within five minutes' travelling time of their station.
Retained support officer for the east of the county Ian Pullen said: "Our retained firefighters play an integral role in the lifesaving work of Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, helping us to provide first-class emergency response cover for our residents.
"They bring a range of skills, expertise and experience which is utilised and built on through being a part of the service.
"I would encourage enthusiastic, dedicated people to submit an application form as soon as possible."
Retained firefighters can be called upon to support their whole-time colleagues in tackling a range of incidents including fires, floods, road traffic collisions and chemical spills.
Many part-time crew members have a full-time job outside of the service and have an agreement with their employer that they can leave work if they are alerted to an incident. Others provide cover during nights or at weekends.
Applicants must be aged 18 or over.
