A WEATHER system, dubbed the ‘beast from the east’, will slam into Burton over the weekend, bringing snow flurries, sub zero temperatures and bitterly cold artic winds
The area of high pressure from Siberia started to hit East Staffordshire and South Derbyshire on Friday morning bringing snow flurries and sub-zero temperatures.
Temperatures in Burton and South Derbyshire could plummet to as low as minus 5c making them colder than St Petersburg, in Russia, Oslo, in Norway, and Stockholm, in Sweden, which are all minus 2c.
Polar winds will make the temperature feel even colder.
A spokesman from Newhall weather station said: “Looking at the dew point the temperature could go down to minus 5c.
“There’s a good indication during the day and early afternoon what the temperature will go down to.”
The spokesman said because the weather front is coming from Siberia any snow will be dry rather than moist.
He added: “I would like to say the cold weather will be over by the end of February but it might run into next month.”
