A SOUTH Derbyshire woman has been honoured with her dedication to sport by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal.

Beryl Horton, who runs swimming and football sessions for people with disabilities, was handed the gong by Princess Anne at the 51st Torch Trophy Trust Awards in London.

The accolade comes hot on the heels of the British Empire Medal, which was bestowed on Mrs Horton in the New Year Honours List, and less than two years after she was selected as an Olympic torchbearer for London 2012.

“I think it’s a follow up to the torch, and then the BEM. It’s all a bit overwhelming,” said Mrs Horton, of Hall Lane, Willington.

She has been involved in disability sports for more than 40 years, getting involved when she started taking her daughter to a special club.

The Torch Trophy Trust was founded in 1962 to recognise outstanding achievement for sports volunteers.
