A COLLECTION of books commemorating soldiers from North West Leicestershire are to be launched next week.
Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Lady Jennifer Gretton, will be on hand to launch three books in the collection of five, each of which contain information on the men whose names adorn memorials throughout the district, including those from Ashby.
The content of each book, which contains detailed information into the lives of each soldier, was carried out by local historians who visited libraries, the Record Office and Kew. They also delved into newspaper accounts of the time, as well as war diaries and village records.
Villagers also contributed by submitting photographs, medals and other memorabilia. Following their launch, the books will be available to buy in local museums.
Nikki Hening, from Diseworth Heritage Trust, said the books gave a detailed insight into the atrocities.
She said: "The horrific accounts of the deaths of the men have shown that while many were killed outright in battle, some of whose bodies have never been found, many others died as a result of wounds or of the many diseases and illnesses that could not be treated as quickly as was necessary."
