FOUR big cheeses were taken down a peg or two when they were locked up in the dungeon at Tutbury Castle for charity.

The historic site was hosting a fund-raising event for Action for Children, in which four managers were locked away for a few hours until they could raise enough money to pay their ransom and get out of the bind.

They were greeted by the executioner, who treated them to a view of his torturous equipment as they sat in grim solitude.

More than £4,000 has been raised so far, with more money expected to roll in over the coming days.

Lesley Smith, curator at Tutbury Castle, said: “They arrived in a lovely BMW and had a horrible time from there on in.

“There was a wonderful atmosphere and we all really enjoyed it.”

The bosses had chance to see the castle’s great hall and the King’s bedroom while they were visiting the site, and they were greeted by Mrs Smith dressed as Mary, Queen of Scots, who was held in the castle

She added: “One man had a mind-blowing experience, when he had what he believed was a child’s head push under his hand. We had some quite powerful things.”
