IN THE KNOW ... Many thanks to Richard Beckett who has helped us identify a number of people in the bowls presentation picture we ran in last week's Sporting Bygones (above).
The man second in from the left was his grandfather Tom Beckett, who passed away in 1979. The fourth in was John Richards (Burton Bowls Life President). The man directly behind the hand shake is Ross Woodward (still going strong and living in Winshill).
The man in white receiving the trophy is Alan Beckett, (living in Forest Road, aged 69) Mr Beckett's father. The man in between him and Ross could be Dave Archer.
At first, Mr Beckett thought the picture, taken in 1973, was from the Old Bass Brewers Bowling Club, at Meadow Lane (now Washlands Sports Club) but on talking to his father, the game was actually being played at Marstons brewery grounds in Shobnall Road.
The competition was for the Burton individual merit men's singles title, which he succeeded in winning. He actually beat two of the men mentioned, Ross in the semi-final and Dave in the final.
The reason Mr Beckett went along the Bass Brewers line was because the men mentioned all played for Bass. His father was the captain at that time of the A team.
Mr Beckett started playing there at ten-years-old, left at 16 to play with other teams and then rejoined 2008 to play, taking on role as captain like his father. Mr Beckett is currently the secretary of the club.
