Brave swimmers set jump in the deep end and navigate part of the River Trent

A GROUP of experienced outdoor swimmers are gearing up for their latest challenge – swimming from one part of South Derbyshire to another along the River Trent in a matter of hours.

The Trent Challenge takes place on Sunday and will see swimmers start from Willington Bridge and finish at Swarkestone Bridge – a total of 11.6km.

Sarah Lewis, a member of the Outdoor Swimming Society, said: “We have been swimming the River Trent for more than two years and decided that we would do a yearly 11k swim.

“Most swims of this distance are held in the south of the country and it would be fitting to have a central one, in the Midlands

“This year the swim will be the first of its type, to ascertain its popularity, hoping that in following years we can repeat the event raising money for local charities.
