A HUGE blue crane has been drafted in to help with work on a Burton bridge.

The machine was wheeled into place as workmen continued to rebuild Wetmore Road railway bridge as part of plans to make improvements to railway lines stretching more than 100 miles from Yorkshire into the Midlands.

The crane was captured by Mail photographer Simon Deacon.

As previously reported by the Mail, the £20 million Doncaster to Water Orton guage enhancement scheme will see changes along the line from Doncaster, in South Yorkshire, to Water Orton, in Warwickshire, which has been earmarked as an ideal route for freight trains.

With much of the line too narrow to allow freight trains to pass, bridges and platforms are being altered to enable the biggest freight trains to make a faster journey to Southampton docks.

The old bridge, one of five being replaced along the route, was demolished before the new year.

Carillion Rail, which is leading the project, now appears to be focussing its efforts on the reconstruction, due to be completed by April.

Diversion routes remain in place.
