A SUSPECTED burglar was chased by police through an estate in Burton as neighbours looked on.

The 33-year-old man hopped over fences in Horninglow in the dead of night with police dogs at his heels as he desperately tried to give officers the slip.

Residents filed into the streets to view the drama as the suspect was eventually arrested.

Police said they received a call about an 'intruder' in a house in Dover Road who then tried to flee.

People living nearby claimed it was more than an hour before the man was caught at around midnight on Friday.

Georgina Harris, who lives in Westfield Road, said there was a heavy police presence in the area as officers tried to locate the suspect.

She said neighbours speculated as to who the man was and what he might have done.

Ms Harris said: "A couple of us went into the street to see what was going on. They had him pinned down with three police dogs around him.

"He was jumping over panels in gardens. He should have been a hurdler the way he was going. None of us knew what was going on."

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: "Following an area search a 33-year-old man from Burton was arrested on suspicion of burglary. He remains on bail pending further inquiries."
