BURTON Albion will host Wigan Athletic in the first round of the League Cup, while Derby County travel to Carlisle United.

It is the first time in six first-round draws that the Brewers have a home tie, although it will still not be an easy task against the Championship Latics, relegated from the Premier League two seasons ago, when they also lifted the FA Cup.

The Rams will travel to Brunton Park to take on the Cumbrians, who have just been relegated to League Two in a a return to one of his former clubs for first-team coach Paul Simpson.

The ties are due to take place during the week beginning Monday, August 11, just after the new season's first round of league fixtures.

And Burton-born Latics fan Jake Green cannot wait to see his club play just down the road.

The Winshill resident said: “I’ve been waiting for this to happen for a long time!

“We (Wigan) came so close a few years ago in the same cup when Burton were edged out by Bradford, who we faced the next round - so that was disappointing!

“But I’m delighted it’s finally happened, it makes it a great start to the season on a personal note and one I’m looking forward too.

“Let’s see if it can be topped by Derby away on the opening day of the Championship season.”

Asked if he had divided loyalties, the Burtonian, who started supporting Wigan after attending university in the north-west, said: “I know it’s bad to sya, but I don’t think so!

“I can see us doing a league and cup double this year, that’s the only reason.”

Burton made it to the second round last season, seeing off Sheffield United before being edged out on penalties by Fulham.

Derby reached the third round, beating Oldham Athletic and Brentford before losing 2-1 at Leicester City.
