GARY Rowett is confident of bringing in a couple of new signings to Burton Albion this week.
The Brewers boss is targeting a striker and a wide player after already snapping up midfield powerhouse John Mousinho and promising defender George Taft.
“We’re just waiting on a couple of players in attacking positions, one winger and one centre forward,” he said last night.
“Hopefully we’ll push on with that this week.
“We’ve got to hang in and be persistent.”
Rowett is happy with the business he has done so far and says patience is vital during the off-season, with quality players often taking some chasing.
“I’m really pleased so far,” he said. “Sometimes patience is the key word.
“We found it last year that often for a lot of the players that are going to make a difference to your team, you’ve got to wait.
“The problem is most of those players are League One quality players, and they can be waiting for League One options.
“We were very fortunate with John Mousinho to be able to do that quickly because he wanted to get sorted.”
Last summer Rowett spent weeks pursuing Adam McGurk and Rene Howe before capturing their signatures.
Goal scorers are often the most in-demand players, as the manager knows.
“With Adam we literally waited until the end of pre-season,” said Rowett.
“The Rene situation was the same.
“While Rene’s signing didn’t work out for us, there was a lot of interest in him and we had to wait for that to disperse for ours to become stronger.
“That’s very much the case in the forward areas - everyone is looking for that 20-goal a season striker.”
Meanwhile, deals are still being thrashed out for Robbie Weir and Damien McCrory.
“We’re a little bit closer to Robbie signing,” said Rowett. “And I think with Damo we’re hopefully in the final discussions.”
