BURTON Regatta, a unique sporting event in the East Midlands, will take place this weekend.
This traditional two-day ‘Oxford v Cambridge’ type boat racing event takes place on the River Trent on the Regatta Meadows off the Burton Washlands.
The event is organised by the Burton Amateur Regatta Association alongside the two rowing clubs in Burton, Trent Rowing Club and Burton Leander Rowing Club, both of whose members will be competing in force over the weekend.
Burton Regatta, first held in 1865, is one of the oldest annual sporting events in the country and is nationally recognised as one of the finest remaining river regattas.
Each year the event attracts competitors from all over the country to compete for a magnificent array of silver trophies which is itself one of the finest collections in the United Kingdom.
This year has a record number of entries, in which the two Burton clubs will be joined by 32 others, an increase of 13 from the previous year, who are not only from the Midlands but as far afield as the North West, East Coast, Severn Valley, Cambridge and London.
These include some of the finest athletes from around the country who compete not only at national but at international levels.
The weekend’s competition also sees entrants from Burton’s German twin town of Lingen, where athletes from the GTRV Lingen Rowing Club will be racing.
Racing starts at 8.30 on both days and aims to finish at 5pm. Saturday offers a course length of 1100 metres racing from the Leicester Line railway bridge to the Ferry footbridge with 69 events, an increase of 18 from the previous year, consisting of 185 races.
Crews return the following day to compete over a 700 metre sprint course with the same finishing line. This will be the busiest day with 70 events and an amazing 198 races.
The event can only survive thanks to a large number of sponsors who are based in and around the Burton area. These range from corporate organisations and businesses to individual donors who all play a major part in the staging of this event.
There will be a number of refreshments marquees, riverside stalls and family amusements where spectators will be able to enjoy an exciting weekend of events whilst relaxing on the river bank.
