THE man who wants to become Burton’s next MP has pledged his support to a campaign to outlaw abuse against military personnel.

Labour’s prospective parliamentary candidate Jon Wheale, an ex-army Captain, spoke out after his party’s leader Ed Miliband said he would consider introducing the measure if the party won the next General Election.

Mr Wheale said: “I know from personal experience that the overwhelming majority of British people, and certainly those here in Burton give unstinting support to the armed forces, which means such a lot to everyone in the services.

“However, there are always those who, for whatever reason, feel it is fair game to discriminate against those in the army, navy or air force.

“Such narrow-minded nastiness and prejudice is wrong and needs to be stamped out and I give my wholehearted support to this pledge.”
