A LARGE-SCALE evacuation has been conducted in Burton town centre today following a chemical leak.

A spill at brewing giant Molson Coors sparked frantic scenes as police cordoned off and evacuated the whole of Station Street following the incident at around 5pm.

Workers flooded on to the streets while crowds of onlookers gathered at police cordons eager to know more.

No details have yet been announced about the type of chemical that escaped from the brewery, although police described it as a minor leak.

Steve Maskrey, commander of Burton Local Policing Unit, attempted to play down the incident saying that the police and fire services had to take immediate action as it wasn’t clear what sort of spill they were dealing with.

He said: “There has been a very minor chemical leak down there which is why ourselves and the fire service have attended the scene.

“There was no threat to the public but in these circumstances we have to ensure public safety and that’s why we’ve ordered evacuations.

“Until we knew the circumstances public safety had to be the priority.”
