NORTHAMPTON Town manager Chris Wilder has admitted he would like to sign Zander Diamond at the end of the season – with the Burton Albion defender enjoying his time on loan at Sixfields.
The 28-year-old fans’ favourite will come to the end of his Brewers contract this summer and, having seen himself fall down the pecking order at the Pirelli Stadium, could leave the club on a free transfer.
A lot could depend on whether the Cobblers avoid relegation out of the Football League, but Diamond is doing his bit to help prevent that.
Northampton are unbeaten since his arrival, and he scored the equalising goal in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Albion’s promotion rivals Scunthorpe United.
“We’re looking at the squad already. A lot of things are on hold obviously,” Wilder told the BBC.
“But come the summer, if we’ve made a good impression on Zander and he’s a free agent we will sit down and chat.”
Diamond, who had played just 13 times for the Brewers this season before leaving last month, said: “It’s great. I’ve enjoyed my time since I’ve been here,” he said after the game.
“The boys have made me feel very welcome and I’m enjoying playing my football again.”
