CROOKS armed with a sledgehammer smashed their way into a garage in Burton before making off with cigarettes.

The thieves struck at the Shell garage on St Peter’s Bridge shortly after midnight on Saturday.

They forced their way through the bottom part of the door minutes after the station had closed, snatching cigarettes before making off in a black Audi A5.

Police are eager to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time or saw a vehicle of that description driving erratically.

Inspector Rob Neeson, of Burton Police, said: “Offenders used a sledgehammer to force the lower glazed portion of the front door and loaded cigarettes into a refuse bin there and left the scene.”

Anyone with information is asked to call 101.
