POLICE chiefs are hunting three people who fled the scene of a crash that took place in supermarket car park.
Staffordshire Police revealed that it was searching for the trio after a green Honda Civic smashed into wooden barriers at Tesco, off St Peter’s Bridge, in Burton, on Monday night.
Eyewitnesses initially reported that the crash was the result of a police chase, but chiefs have since denied that this was the case.
Officers are now urging members of the public to get in touch to try and find the three people involved in the incident.
A spokesman for the force told the Mail: “We can confirm that we were called to reports of a road traffic collision in the car park of Tesco supermarket, located off St Peter’s Bridge, by members of the public.
“Officers arrived at the scene to find a green Honda Civic had crashed into a wooden barrier on the edge of the supermarket car park.
“The car was found to be stuck in place after being lodged between the wooden barrier and the pavement.
“We understand that the three occupants fled the scene following the road traffic collision and did not return to the vehicle.
“The incident took place at around 8pm on Monday evening and officers have now launched an investigation into the matter.
“We are looking to trace the three people who were seen in the vehicle in the run up to the crash and officers would like to speak to them as soon as possible. We would urge anyone with information to come forward.
“Contrary to rumours, the incident did not involve a police chase.”
Anyone with information is urged to call 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
