A SUMMIT between Government ministers and council leaders was held to discuss how investment in transport can stimulate economic growth.

The meeting between transport minister Norman Baker, and Staffordshire County Council (SCC) leaders took place at Stafford Town Hall on Monday March 5.

Philip Atkins, SCC leader, joined a panel of speakers to highlight that ‘transport and economy go hand in hand in Staffordshire.’

Mr Baker praised the Your Staffordshire Card, launched by SCC to give 11-19-year-olds £1 bus travel, after it was revealed 34,000 youngsters in the county use one.

Speaking after the event, Mr Atkins said better roads, reliable rail links and quality public transport were all needed to help the UK economy out of the recession.

He said: “Local and central government must work closer together to deliver the infrastructure we need to strengthen local economies, and forge partnerships with the private sector to help deliver these schemes.

“Monday’s discussion looked at local successes, such as the tens of thousands of young people benefiting from the Your Staffordshire Card.

“Councils need the backing of Government to innovate, find local solutions and invest their own resources in their transport network.”

No it shouldn't. I don't use the railways why should I subsidise London commuters who earn 65k PA through my taxes? I already pay road tax to use the roads and we know that revenue isn't spent on the roads. I don't know what you think it will get going. The lazy ***** I see couldn't get off benefits if they had a cattle prod behind them.
