A HUSBAND and wife have pleaded guilty to running a brothel in Burton.
James Norton, 62, and Xie Norton, 46, of Blakeholme Court, Horninglow, admitted managing a brothel used for prostitution in Caxton Court between August 28, 2007 and November 25, 2011.
Giles Rowden, prosecuting, told Burton Magistrates’ Court that on November 25 last year, police executed a search warrant on a flat in Claxton Court, Burton.
Mr Rowden said that on entering the flat, officers found various rooms and in two of these were men and women about to engage in sexual activity.
Both defendants made admissions during a police interview.
James Norton told officers he had been renting the property for four years and knew it was being used as a brothel.
Xie Norton also accepted knowledge of the flat being used for this purpose.
Mr Rowden said that due to the length of time the brothel had been in operation, he believed the couple should be sent to crown court for sentencing.
John Skinner, defending, made no representations at this time.
Magistrates agreed and the couple will appear at Stafford Crown Court for sentencing.
A date is yet to be set.
The Mail originally reported the raid of the property in November last year.
Police uncovered the brothel following tip-offs from residents.
After a surveillance operation and further investigation, they applied for a search warrant to enter the flat which they did just before 9pm on November 25.
Police Inspector Dan Ison, told the Mail: “Brothels and the illegal sex trade will not be tolerated in Burton. We will deal with any incidents swiftly.”
