DEMOLITION work has begun on a derelict pub in South Derbyshire after controversial plans to build a Sainsbury's Local convenience store were approved.
The Mason's Arms in Burton Road, Midway, has been empty since it closed more than five years ago, and now the supermarket giant is gearing up to start work there.
Plans for the Sainsbury's store attracted a substantial amount of opposition, including a petition with hundreds of signatures, and the support of a local councillor, due to the location of the site in relation to the busy A511 and at a notorious junction.
Despite the proposals originally being rejected by South Derbyshire District Council's planning committee, the decision was overturned in Sainsbury's favour by the independent planning inspectorate.
Following the demolition, alterations and improvements will be made to the highway.
