DERBYSHIRE'S deputy police and crime commissioner has praised independent custody visitors for their work.
Hardyal Dhindsa says that volunteers carry out their work with enthusiasm and integrity, adding that they offer reassurance to members of the public that detainees are being treated appropriately while in custody.
The volunteers make two visits a year to the custody suite in Swadlincote to ensure it is in a ready state to house temporary detainees.
Mr Dhindsa said: "They do not take sides either for or against the detainees or custody staff, but act in the best interest of all involved. Their contribution is extremely valuable to us all."
