DERBYSHIRE Police is asking the public to be aware of an ongoing door-to-door charity scam.

The con involves the perpetrator visiting houses and persuading the owners to hand over cash, under the pretence the money is for charity.

Members of the public have reported they were visited by a woman claiming to be seeking sponsorship for her son's charity walk in aid of Help for Heroes.

Officers believe the fraud has been committed in various areas, often on victims that are unaware they have been conned.

Police are advising people to not hand over cash on the doorstep unless they know the person. Alternatively, ask to donate to the charity directly by other methods.

Anyone who thinks they may have been a victim of this type of fraud can contact Derbyshire Constabulary on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
