A DESCRIPTION has been released of a man accused of stealing £200 by distracting an elderly couple.

The incident in Woodville Road, Overseal, happened at 11am on Wednesday.

A man called at the house claiming he was from the ‘water board’ and needed to make checks in the house. He turned on the taps and emptied the cupboards, while another man went upstairs and stole the cash.

The couple later noticed cash had been stolen

The first man is described as white, in his late 40s or early 50s, well built, between 5ft 8 and 10, wearing a dark baseball cap and dark clothing.

It comes as Chris Bond (pictured), Derbyshire Police’s expert on Operation Liberal – a national crackdown on doorstep and distraction burglaries – said elderly people were more likely to become victims of the crimes.

He said: “Criminals seem to think targeting elderly people is easy pickings but it is cowardly because the thieves don’t want to meet other people who they think will ask questions.”
