HOMEOWNERS in East Staffordshire and South Derbyshire are being reminded to make sure they use registered gas fitters.
The annual Gas Safety Week, which raises awareness of the problems caused when using unqualified fitters, is running from September 15 to September 21. Research has shown that one in three people trust a tradesman based on the recommendation of a friend or neighbour without checking their qualifications. Danny Davis, of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering, has described the findings as 'alarming' and says that people risk putting their own lives in danger by not using a qualified engineer. He said it also put professional installers at a disadvantage.
He said: "This type of work should only be carried out by professionals and it is important that the public is aware of this and the dangers associated with incorrect choices."
