Just days ahead of the official launch on Wednesday, August 18, the Mail was invited to experience a sneak peek of the £5million transformation as staff prepare to welcome droves of families through the door.

The refurbishment project has achieved a “celebration of light, space and attention to detail which is sure to delight and impress everyone who visits,” said Councillor Bernard Peters, deputy leader for service commissioning.

As visitors walk through the front door, they will be greeted with a revamped reception, cafe and foyer space beaming with bright colours and glass frontage, looking out across the Washlands.

Sports studios, a children’s play area, swimming pool, balcony space, ‘village-style’ family changing facilities, disabled changing rooms kitted with specialist hoist equipment and a gym packed with state-of-the-art equipment are just some of the features boasted by the development.

Councillor Peters said: “The Meadowside Leisure Centre really embraces the surrounding landscape and celebrates the Washlands. The use of windows, light and space is astonishing and one can’t help but be impressed by this awe-inspiring achievement as soon as you set foot through the door.

“This project has been a challenge for the council. We canvassed opinion and we believe we have met the aspirations of the public, as well as delivering it on time and on budget – not forgetting this has been achieved during a recession.

“I can guarantee when the public walk through the door they will be absolutely impressed by what has been achieved here.

“Attention to detail has been paramount and I look forward to seeing people’s reaction as they use this wonderful facility.”
Open from 10am on Wednesday, August 18, customers will be offered – on a first come, first served basis – free use of the swimming pool, squash courts and sports hall.

Keith Hayday of Maber Architects, who delivered the project, said: “This has been a challenging project to work on and we are delighted to have been involved .

“The centre now takes advantage of its stunning location by the riverside as well as providing excellent facilities for swimming, sport, fitness and other family activities, to appeal to the local community and beyond. The image for the centre has been completely transformed and we feel confident that it has a bright future.”
