Park's star is shining as brightly as ever

Live review By ROB SMYTH
LIVE: Linkin Park at Birmingham LG Arena
FOR many Nu-metal bands, such as Limp Bizkit and Korn, their fame and popularity reached its peak during the early part of this century and has since faded into obscurity.

But one band — Linkin Park — who appeared on the scene at the same time have just released their fourth album, are halfway through a world tour and show no sign of stopping yet.

As part of the tour, the six-part band arrived in Birmingham and put on one of the shows of the year at the newly refurbished LG Arena at the NEC.

The Californian group used the near two-hour set to showcase songs from their new album, A Thousand Suns, as well as mixing in old classics from Minutes to Midnight, Meteora and Hybrid Theory.

The Grammy Award-winning Linkin Park opted for a simple stage, choosing to focus on singing fan-pleasing tunes rather than elaborate stage theatrics.

What was also noticeable from the show was that the band appeal to a diverse and wide range of people, from young children to middle-aged men and women.

This is reflected in the band’s music style, which has evolved and changed since they were formed in the late 1990s.

What began as nu-metal or rap metal has moved on to alternative rock and electronica and this is evident in the varied track list on this impressive night.

Mike Shinoda ran the show as the band’s main musical force, using keyboards and guitars as well as rapping on hits such as Bleed it Out and In the End.

Chester Bennington offered a fantastic and intriguing vocal range, from screaming his way through Given Up or Blackout to altering tone completely to wow the audience with his soulful side on Leave Out All The Rest.

The pair played off each other extremely well and provide great vocal interplay.

The band were excellent live and offered a great selection of past and present hits to satisfy all elements of their fan base.

After going to see Linkin Park, it is easy to see why only days earlier the band walked away from the MTV European Music Awards with Best Live Act.

They were sensational, never dipping in quality and well worth the many years of waiting to see them.

A five-star band with a five-star show.
