A DAMAGED flag pole has been removed in preparation to turn Burton's town hall annexe into a new university centre.

East Staffordshire Borough Council employed a large crane to repair the town hall clock tower which was damaged when its flag pole broke due to high winds earlier in the year.

It was also then decided to relocate the flag pole on the town hall annexe to the main town hall building.

A borough council spokesman said: "Work took place to repair damage on top of the town hall clock tower caused when the flag pole broke earlier in the year following bad weather.

"At the same time, a flagpole was relocated from the town hall annexe in preparation for the handover to the University Technical College (UTC)."

In a multi-million pound deal, the borough council has agreed to the sale of the town hall extension, which has been empty since 2011.

The recently approved UTC is expected to open in September 2015 and will offer core GCSE and A-level subjects, bio-medical sciences, engineering as well and vocational courses.
