Pay day has come and gone and student loans have been entrusted to the welcoming bank accounts of excited students which means pockets are suitably lined in preparation for keeping away those winter blues. To avoid making some reckless purchases, I’ve thrown together a few pieces that I think are winter staples which will be bang on trend without being one season wonders.
Channeling the masculine trend, this wardrobe essential screams versatility with leather lapels adding a bit of an idiosyncratic edge to what might have otherwise been a fairly simplistic, high street piece. The detailing of the double pocket shows how much thought has gone into this coat which will definitely be a piece to covet for several cold seasons to come.
Topshop is one of the pioneers of high street fashion and this winter it has not disappointed. With collections by Louise Gray and J.W. Anderson, Topshop is allowing those of us on a tight budget to purchase designer pieces for a fraction of of the price they would otherwise be. These collaborations have sent ripples through other retailers with graphic print sweaters popping up in every high street store. This is after Louise sent models adorned with sequinned smiley faces down the catwalk whilst J.W. Anderson headed to the British wool mills to produce the covetable and iconic bat sweater that has already proven to be very popular this season.
As the leaves begin to fall off the trees this month, there is an unfortunate tendency for rain to turn the pavements into something akin to an ice rink. This certainly doesn’t mean that your footwear must become dull and boring. Urban Outfitters have offered up some wonderfully eye-catching (yet sensible) shoes to ensure that you look fabulous and do not have to worry about losing your Louboutins catching in a hidden grate.
“Ladies, frost yourselves!” is one of the most famous lines from the film ‘How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days’. This expression has been leapt upon by the fashion industry recently with some fabulous costume jewellery popping up on the high street. Most recently, Anna Dello Russo has collaborated with H&M and produced some stunning, outrageous pieces for a fraction of their designer status price. This gorgeous snake necklace screams classy sophistication and at only £34.99 it’s a true investment!
The make up
Over the past few weeks, models have strutted down the Spring/Summer 2013 catwalks in London, Paris, Milan and New York revealing next season’s trends. Although the look was a lot softer than the Autumn/Winter 2012 shows, with models having much fuller brows and more pastel shades worn, I was won over by the ‘cat eye’ look championed by the NARS beauty team working backstage at Acne’s show. This focus on eyes allows for a minimal approach to the rest of the face with barely-there foundation and a soft, pink lip.
That little something extra
As the weather becomes more autumnal and dusk descends earlier, the idea of a warm, cosy café seems incredibly tempting. With Starbucks announcing its Christmas drinks menu which includes pumpkin spiced lattes and salted caramel lattes, the draw towards the coffee shop to banish the wintery blues becomes irresistible. Pair either of these numbers with a deliciously naughty chocolate brownie for that perfect post-work treat.
