A MAN was arrested in a Burton supermarket only hours after landing in the country from Romania.

Vasilo Niculae turned to crime almost immediately after arriving in Burton, stealing nearly £200 worth of alcohol from Tesco on St Peter's Bridge.

Burton Magistrates' Court heard the 50-year-old had come to Britain in search of work and had arranged to meet somebody in the store.

Niculae was one of three men seen acting suspiciously and was caught leaving the supermarket with a trolley filled with stolen booze. He was arrested at around 2.45pm on Tuesday, only four hours after landing at Luton Airport.

His solicitor, John Skinner, said his actions were naive.

Niculae, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to theft. As magistrates were told Niculae had no money to pay a fine they intended to hand out, he was instead sentenced to five days in prison.
