ALMOST 200 people from a South Derbyshire village turned up to a meeting to vent their anger over plans to turn a pub into a funeral home.

The Wheel Inn, in Findern, was sold to Burton-based Murray’s Funeral Directors by Punch Taverns.

Thee firm has applied to South Derbyshire District Council to change its use from a pub to a funeral directors.

Residents are determined to save the pub and held a meeting on Sunday, ahead of a meeting of the district council’s planning committee tonight, when a final decision is due to be made.

A Facebook page called ‘Save The Wheel Inn’ has been set up and South Derbyshire MP Heather Wheeler has also given her support.

The meeting gave people the chance to have their say on what should be mentioned in a three-minute speech due to be given ahead of the meeting at the council’s offices in Civic Way. A number of the villagers are due to attend the meeting.

Resident Phil Watts said: “Findern is an English village with a church and post office. People are proud of the village and the pub is part of that.”
