THE spirit of St George will be celebrated at a special event organised by a Burton brewing giant.

Marston’s, in Shobnall Road, has revealed details of its St George’s Day beer festival and family fun day.

The event is set to take place on Saturday, April 20 this year as this is the nearest Saturday to St George’s Day – which takes place on April 23.

A spokesman for the firm told the Mail: “It is a shame the Chancellor, George Osbourne, who visited the brewery last week, didn’t turn up to Marston’s a couple of weeks later as it would have created some interest for the annual Marston’s St George’s Day Beer Festival and Family Fun Day.

“This year, the event is being held on the April 20 as the nearest Saturday to St George’s Day.

“Tickets are £5 per adult and kids can go free.

“The £5 entry fee includes one half pint of beer and a special edition glass tankard.

“The event includes a beer festival with twelve Marston’s beers, a shire horse and dray, a bouncy castle, vintage motorcycle and mini display, a live band, hog roast, locally made ice cream and much more.

“It will take place from noon until 4pm at the brewery based in Shobnall Road.”

The brewing giant has also revealed that Graham Benford, fleet manager for Marston’s, will be again be parading during the event as St George - a repeat of last year.

It is also expected that hundreds of Scouts from across Burton will parade through the town centre for their annual St George’s Day parade.

The event, for which a date has yet to be revealed, is held in honour of the patron saint of Scouting, St George.

Cartoonist Bill Tidy will also welcome guests to an event, scheduled to be held at 7.30pm on Saturday, April 20, at Holy Trinity Church, in Ashby to mark the occasion.
