Fruit and veg still good to eat despite survey results

HEALTH officials have urged people in Burton to carry on eating fruit and vegetables after a new study claimed that consuming five portions a day does not significantly reduce the risk of cancer.

An international team of researchers studied 500,000 Europeans and discovered that only 2.5 per cent of cancers could be stopped by eating more fruit and vegetables.

A South Staffordshire Primary Care Trust spokesperson said: “South Staffordshire Primary Care Trust advises people to eat healthily, such as eating fruit and vegetables, as part of a balanced diet no matter what.

“A diet including fruit and vegetables provides people with a source of vitamins, minerals and fibre that can help to reduce the risk of serious health problems, including: cancer; heart disease; and type 2 diabetes.

This study, led by researchers from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, in New York, confirmed that the association between fruit and vegetable intake and reduced cancer risk is weak.

But experts still stressed that eating fruit and vegetables is still key to good healthy life.
