OLYMPIC medal hopeful swimmer Lewis White has turned to coaching his fellow pupils at the Pingle School in Swadlincote.

Year 9 pupil Lewis, who has been identified as a medal hopeful at the next Paralympics, has been invited by British Swimming to join the prestigious Podium Potential Programme which makes a medal well within his grasp.

Dan Brown, head of PE at the school, told the Mail: ‘The school supports Lewis with his swimming and we are excited at the possibility of one of our students as a medal hopeful at the Paralympics.

“But this term sees Lewis’ class doing rugby in their PE lessons and the risk of injury to him is one we don’t want to take.

“It was Lewis who came up with the great idea of coaching swimming to some of the other pupils.

“We value Lewis’ expertise and experience and he has quickly become a valued member of the team.”

Lewis said: “I’m really pleased I have been given this opportunity at school.

“Coaching other people is a very different skill to what I am used to but I’ve been seeing how it is done from my own coaches.”
