BURTON Amateur Swimming Club believe they are on the right path to becoming an outfit who can compete against the best in the country after a successful meet at the Staffordshire County Swimming Championships.

At the Stafford Leisure Centre event last month, 16 swimmers took part and recorded 26 personal best times across the 43 races in which they competed.

Spokesman Mick Hayes said: “On the back of some very good performances and results in recent galas, we were confident to put on a good performance.

“But even the most optimistic would admit that they were blown away with the success of the County Qualifiers.

“Almost half of the swimmers being placed in the top 10 of their allocated age groups, with an overall total of 20 competitors ranked, is an incredible effort.

“Burton’s vision to become a club that can compete against the very best is slowly taking shape, accompanied with the dedication and support of the proud parents – cheering every stroke from the seats.

“This can only see us getting stronger and stronger as the year progresses.”

The first weekend saw county debuts for Katie Reilly, (Under-9s 200m freestyle, 50m backstroke), Sophie Fowkes,(Under-9s 50m butterfly, 50m backstroke) and Josie Stevenson (Under-12s backstroke).

Other competitors were Jack Ward, (Under-10s 200m breaststroke, 50m breaststroke, 100m IM, 50m freestyle), Emily Eccleshall, (Under-15s 100m backstroke), Adam Doughty, (Under-12s 50m breaststroke), Matt Gates, (Under-12s 50m breaststroke, 100m IM, 50m freestyle), Theo Hamilton, (Under-12s 50m breaststroke, 100m IM, 50m freestyle), Harry Thomson, ( Under-13s 100 IM) and Matt Evans, Under-15s 50m freestyle).

Hayes said: “The quality of swimming on show was nothing short of impeccable, with the Burton contingent contributing to the very high standards.

“Eleven personal best swims being set in the 19 races over the first weekend, with the rest swimming agonisingly close to their best times.

The second weekend saw more debuts, for Emma Monkhouse, (Under-16s 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle), Kirsty Lambley, (Under-11s 50m freestyle), Annabelle Joseph, (Under-11s 50m freestyle), Emma Preston, Under-10s 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke).

The other competitors were Jack Ward, (Under-10s 200m freestyle), Reilly, (Under-9s 200m breaststroke, 50m breaststroke, 100m IM, 50m freestyle), Evans, (Under-15s 50m backstroke, 50m Fly, 100M backstroke), Ben Ward, (Under-18s 100m backstroke), Stevenson (Under-12s 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle, 100m IM), Fowkes (Under-9s 100m IM, 50m freestyle), Thomson, (Under-13s 50m backstroke), Hamilton, (Under-12s 50m backstroke), Hayley Brightman, (Under-11s 50m freestyle),

Hayes said: “The club can be extremely proud of each swimmer that represented Burton at the Championships this year.

“Just to qualify for this event is an outstanding achievement as the qualifying time is on average eight seconds faster than neighbouring counties.

“And to follow that up with some fantastic swims and times is credit to the individual swimmers.”
