A HORDE of illegal immigrants have been arrested after they were discovered hiding in the back of a lorry headed for a South Derbyshire business.
Derbyshire Police were alerted just after 4am yesterday when a security guard uncovered seven immigrants after hearing noises coming from the back of a lorry bound for a firm in Occupation Lane, Woodville.
Police arrived and detained the group, who were then transported to police headquarters in Derby for questioning.
Initial reports seemed to indicate that the group smuggled themselves on board the lorry while it was travelling through France.
Police have not yet revealed details of the business they were headed to.
A spokesman for Derbyshire Police revealed that Nigel Lidsey (right), section inspector for Derby South, was heading an investigation into the discovery.
He said: “We were called to an incident at around 4.05am after a security guard detected strange noises emanating from the back of a lorry headed for a business in Occupation Lane, Woodville.
“Upon further inspection, he discovered that there were seven illegal immigrants found in the lorry.
“Officers arrived on scene and then, with the help of colleagues, transported the group to Derby for further processing.
“The group were set to be interviewed but officers were awaiting the arrival of specially trained investigators.
“The driver of the lorry was interviewed at the scene but he had no involvement with the group’s arrival in the UK.
“Early investigations seem to show that the group boarded the lorry illegally while it was passing through parts of France on its way to the UK.
“However, it seems from early interviews, that the group are not actually from France and could be from another country.
“We are working with the immigration authorities to find out where the group came from.”
