BURTON Albion boss Gary Rowett says new loan signing Adam Buxton will help to cover after the retirement of ex-Premier League star Rory Delap.

The 22-year-old joined the Brewers on loan for a month from Wigan Athletic on Friday.

Buxton can play anywhere across the back four and Rowett is glad to have some quality cover for his defenders.

“With Rory’s retirement and Jack Dyer going out (on loan to Kidderminster) we’ve been a little bit light for numbers,” said the manager.

“We’ve got to make sure that, as much as I want to maybe shuffle the pack a tiny bit, I’ve got to be mindful of leaving ourselves short in the meantime.

“He’s one we’ve watched and tried to get before so it’s great he’s come for a month.

“It’s a good opportunity for us to have a look at him and a good experience for him to get out and hopefully get some minutes of first-team football on the pitch.”

Rowett and his coaching staff have watched the promising defender for an extended period of time before they got the green light from Wigan to take him on loan.

“We’ve watched him for quite some time,” said the Albion boss. We’ve seen him play at right-back, left back, across a back three.

“I like the look of him – he’s a good footballer, a strong boy, and he’ll add to what we’ve got.

“We’re a little bit short at the moment defensively.

“Damien (McCrory) wouldn’t have started today. He wasn’t involved and has really been struggling with his hamstring.

“I think Adam’ll be a good addition to what we’ve got and we’ll see how he gets on during the month.”
