GOLDEN oldies from a care home have been vying for Olympic stardom as part of a pilot project to encourage volunteers to befriend residents.

Residents, relatives and staff from Overseal Care Home took part in an assortment of specially adapted sports-themed activities, planned and created by volunteers Jane German and Eddie Wadsworth as part of a 'Mini Olympics' event.

These included horse racing, javelin throwing and a play your cards right game.

Care home staff also donned scarves, hats and wellies to take part in an obstacle race.

Two volunteers were recruited by the South Derbyshire CVS volunteer centre as part of a pilot project run by national charity NCVO, to encourage volunteers to befriend and engage care home residents.

Overseal Care Home manager Liz Burgess-Smith said: "It was brilliant – all the residents had such a good time."
