GRESLEY boss Martin Rowe is backing his players to be fired up for tomorrow’s clash with Sheffield, kick-off 3pm, after being kicked off the park last weekend, writes DAVID BROOME.
The Moatmen lost 2-1 at Lincoln United after referee James Bateman failed to clamp down on the hosts’ roughhousing tactics, and Rowe said: “They were just as upset as everybody else.
“But I was proud of them.
“When we went down to 10 men, they didn’t give up.
“It would have been quite easy to just say ‘I don’t fancy this’, but they stuck at it.”
Rowe was also encouraged by the part the crowd played last weekend ahead of a return to home turf on which they are enjoyable a lengthy unbeaten run.
“The crowd stuck up for us on Saturday and they could see what Lincoln were all about,” he said.
“They were very vocal, which was encouraging.”
Meanwhile, Rowe admits he does his not know whether to stick or twist in terms of squad strengthening.
“We could do with another midfielder and another forward, but we’ve had people looking for some time and they haven’t picked anybody up,” said the Moat chief.
“The hardest thing is to bring players in who are better than what you’ve got, because they cost money.
“And we have to decide if we want to waste money on a season where we’re probably safe (from relegation).
“But we’ve got a duty to the supporters to finish as high as we can.”
For a cut-price option, Rowe could always look to Gresley’s second string, from whence young forward Zibusiso Nyatitio was plucked to come off the bench and play half the game at Lincoln.
“The reserves are looking good at the moment,” said Rowe.
“(Zibusiso Nyatitio) was playing for the reserves and played in a first-team friendly against Heather St Johns and did well.
“He was given his chance on Saturday and didn’t let himself down at all.
“It’s more than likely he’ll keep his place in the squad.”
Jack Langston (bruised foot) is unlikely to return tomorrow, but Mickey Lyons is available again, Royce Turville (pictured, head gash) should return, and Kieran O’Connell is rated 50-50.
John Guy will be available for selection ahead of an impending suspension for his red card last week.
“When we have Mickey Lyons and Kieron O’Connell out, we miss a bit of creativity, but hopefully they’ll both be back,” said Rowe.
