DAIRY Crest in Foston received a visit from the chair of the health and safety executive, Judith Hackett CBE, on Thursday.

Judith she was very impressed with the practices and the management’s commitment following a factory tour.

She said she had been to other premises were people’s health had been overlooked but that Dairy Crest has a clear approach to health and safety.

She said: “Even in places as small this there are technical advances going on all the time.

“What we were looking at was about what health and safety is about. People could get seriously injured so it is right and proper that people are able to go home from work healthy and safe.

“Banning conkers and egg and spoons races is not what we’re about - there is a difference.”

Andy Melachrino, head of group health and safety at the firm, said the reason they had such a great record because they never took their foot off the gas.

He said: “It’s a combination of having strong leadership and passion. What we are talking about is people’s lives and their families’ lives, so the leadership team is very focused and health.”
