A BURTON woman will take part in three major sporting challenges this year.

Harriet Walsh, from Bretby, will run an ultra marathon in March, followed by a 250km ‘fire and ice’ challenge in August. This will be followed later in the year by a three day foot race.

She said: “After the Bamburgh marathon and a few weeks recovering, I’ll be starting my training for The Fire and Ice Ultra in Iceland which takes place in August.

“It’s a 250km self-sufficient foot race in seven set stages over seven days. It crosses the northern glaciers and lava fields in Iceland and competitors have to carry all their own kit, sleeping bag and food in a backpack.”

At the moment she is preparing for the first of the challenges with an intense training schedule, built specially for her by Simon Wheatcroft at Total Body gym. This will see her covering up to 78 miles in a week, with some days seeing her run 34 miles.

Simon is monitoring her performance to make sure she doesn’t pick up any injuries from the extra mileage while she train for the race.

Harriet, who raises money for Burton charities, said: “The days that don’t have any miles on I use for rest, swimming, weight training and other cross training.

“I’m squeezing most of my week day miles in before work at the moment but as they ramp up I’ve got half day holidays planned in because even I can’t drag myself out of bed in time to do a 20 plus mile run before 8am.”

Last year Harriet was forced to cancel a trek across the South Pole which she had been training hard for, due to funding problems.

The first challenge of the year - the Bamburgh Ultra Marathon- takes place in March.

After that she will begin training for the Fire and Ice challenge which is expected to see her undergo an even more gruelling schedule.
