Staffordshire Police’s Road Policing Team are inviting all motorcyclists to take part in this year’s free BikeSafe events.
This year there will be eight events held throughout the county, between March and August.
These include one-to-one riding assessments with a police motorcyclist and a special ladies’ day.
The BikeSafe initiative is a national programme run by a number of police forces throughout the UK. As part of its commitment to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on the road, Staffordshire Police continues to support this initiative and is one of the only forces in the country that doesn’t charge for this facility.
Organiser PC John Edmondson, said: “We believe education is the best way to reduce casualties on the county’s roads, and that this service should be available to all people whatever their personal circumstances.”
BikeSafe was initially designed to bridge the gap between passing a full motorcycle test and further training to advance standard. It was developed as a direct response to the nationally high number of fatal and serious injury collisions involving motorcyclists.
Statistics show that motorcyclists are in the region of one per cent of vehicles on the road but they account for approximately 26 per cent of casualties.
PC Edmondson added: “The first part of the scheme consists of a DVD presentation on areas of riding such as cornering, positioning, overtaking, junctions and hazard perception. The DVD is an aid to demonstrate these techniques and how to carry them out safely, it also shows the consequences of poor judgement.
“The second part of the scheme gives you the opportunity to have a one-to-one riding assessment, carried out by one of our police motorcyclists on a marked police motorcycle. This covers in the region of 25 miles on all manner of roads in the surrounding area. The scheme concludes with feedback on your riding and a certificate of attendance to commemorate the occasion.”
