PROFITS rose by nearly £10 million at a retail giant which employs nearly 500 people in Burton, latest figures have shown.
Holland and Barrett’s pre-tax profits rose by 13.3 per cent to £84.3 million for the year to September 2013, while sales were also up by £4.3 per cent.
Bosses at the health food giant, which has its packaging and distribution centre on the Centrum 100 business park, said it was an indication of an ‘extremely strong’ performance.
The company expanded its empire during the period, opening seven new stores in the UK and 42 franchises.
A spokesman said: “Both the activity in the year and the year-end financial position of the company are extremely strong despite the economic trading conditions currently being experienced within the retail sector.”
Bosses said the company had focused on training staff to NVQ-level and creating own-brand products to become a ‘truly multi-channel’ retailer.
The firm’s 130,000 sq ft plant opened in Burton in 2011.
In total, Holland and Barrett currently operates 664 UK stores and 72 franchise outlets in seven countries.
